The venerable grande dame of historic hotels and home of the famed literary Round Table of Dorothy Parker, the Algonquin is now home to its most important resident: hotel cat Matilda, a glamorous Ragdoll, who welcomes travellers and fellow pets. The Algonquin has a long history of fawned-over resident cats, if female, they are named Matilda, if male they are anointed Hamlet after thespian John Barrymore. The Algonquin is also allegedly haunted, so those of you who hate cats, beware.

For their furry guests, the hotel provides cat or dog beds, a litter box, bowls and a welcome kit. One pet up to 50lbs is welcome at no additional fee.

The world's most famous hotel cat

Watch Matilda take a nap on the front desk on Insta or join her 11,000 followers and like her on Facebook. Fans of Matilda also have the option of emailing her directly and sending gifts. The staff donates toys to local shelters since all of the Algonquin feline residents have been strays or rescues.
